NRCT organizes various programs to celebrate the Wetlands Day

 

Nepal River Conservation Trust (NRCT), a non-profit organization actively involved in raising awareness and preserving the rivers of Nepal, organized a series of programs to celebrate the Wetlands Day which fell on February 2, 2009. The main objectives behind organizing the various programs were: to increase local participation in conserving the rivers and raising awareness among the locals about the need to preserve such rivers, to effectively disseminate information about the river happenings in the area and to create awareness about climate change. The main theme of the wetlands day celebration which was river focused was ‘Upstream, downstream: Wetlands connect us well’.

 

The various programs that were organized are as follows:

 

  • Interaction cum workshop program: An ‘Interaction cum workshop’ program was organized on February 24, 2009 for the river bank schools of the Bhote Koshi river basin. The program saw participation from approximately 12 local schools.

  • Quiz contest organized: A quiz contest was organized on February 25, 2009 for the local river bank schools of the Bhote Koshi River basin in which approximately 12 local schools participated.

  • Community awareness rafting program: On February 26, 2009, the NRCT organized a community awareness rafting program in which river bank representatives of 13 schools, 15 clubs and local people participated. The program saw active participation from approximately 60 participants.

  • 11th Annual River Festival and community awareness rafting program: The 11th Annual River Festival and community awareness rafting program was organized on February 28, 2009. Around 90 participants including representatives from NGOs, INGOs, environmentalists, local school kids and journalists actively took part in the day long program which was considered a success as it was able to attain its objectives to a certain extent.
